If you've ever struggled with eczema (atopic dermatitis) or any form of dermatitis, you know all too well how frustrating constant itching, dryness, redness, and the stubborn flare-ups can be. But, often, these external symptoms are merely the surface of what's going on deeper within your body. It’s time to take a holistic approach and focus on what’s truly causing the issue – from the inside out.
What exactly is eczema?
Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can be triggered by a variety of internal and external factors. Instead of just treating the symptoms, it’s important to understand what might be causing the flare-ups.
👉 Hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) – Did you know that if your stomach isn’t producing enough acid, it can interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption? This, in turn, can lead to inflammation in the body, which shows up on your skin.
👉 Leaky Gut Syndrome – A compromised gut barrier allows toxins and undigested food particles to leak into the bloodstream, causing systemic inflammation that can manifest as eczema flare-ups.
👉 Candida and gut flora imbalances – Overgrowth of yeast in the gut can lead to infections that show up on the skin as eczema.
👉 Food allergies – Certain foods may trigger eczema outbreaks, as your body’s immune system reacts to allergens.
👉 Stress and chronic tension – Your mind plays a huge role in how your body reacts! Chronic stress leads to an increase in inflammatory hormones, which can worsen eczema. When you’re stressed, your skin can suffer too.
How does the immune system affect your skin?
Your skin is your body’s outer defence, but in the case of eczema, it becomes a battleground for an overactive immune response. When your immune system is hyperactive, it leads to inflammation, which results in the red, itchy patches of eczema. Strengthening the immune system and calming the inflammatory response is the key to improving your skin's condition.
Which herbs can help with eczema?
Fortunately, nature has provided us with some fantastic herbs that support skin health and can help soothe eczema symptoms.
🌸 Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) – Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, blackthorn helps regenerate skin and reduce inflammation.
🫐 Blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) – Packed with antioxidants, blueberries reduce inflammation and support skin healing.
🌿 Hawthorn Berry (Crataegus monogyna) – Known to improve circulation, hawthorn also helps regenerate the skin thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.
🌼 Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) – Chamomile is perfect for soothing irritated skin and calming eczema flare-ups.
Gut health is the key to healthier skin!
